How Much Should You Disclose About Yourself?

In the internet world, information is free to everyone and unless you protect or limit the amount of information you disclose, you may end up with situations beyond your control. Even though you have the right to freedom of speech, if you do not monitor what you say, it may impact you negatively in the future. Companies, when hiring, go through a screening process and there are professionals who will look for every record on you. Since the internet is an open source of information, anything you pose, becomes public information and they can in turn, use it against you. Due to a lack of censoring, a silly mistake may cost you the most important job of your life. If you maintain an online blog, be sure to only post the information you do not mind sharing with everyone. Often your personal thoughts and what you write can cause you problems in the future. Try your best to be clear and do not offend any specific person or group of people, as that would be abusing your right to freedom of speech.

Often people think that the information they publish over the internet, or through text messages and emails, is temporary and are cleared once deleted. The truth is each thing you post or publish is stored for years and during an investigation, the past will surface very easily. The same goes for social network sites and you have to be careful with those too. Social network sites are reviewed by many people and chances are, a percentage of the ones viewing your information, do not even know you. The more information you give out, the easier it is for you to become a victim, so limit the information you provide. When disclosing content about your personal life, be sure to have a clear head and review what you have written before posting.
