Social Networking Affecting Who Gets Hired

Social Networking was once the word used for making as many friends across the country as humanly possible. Some of the most popular people on social networking sites have up to as many as 100,000 friends. That’s a lot of friends, but more importantly, that’s a lot of people downloading information to and from a persons social networking page. Situations like this have become unique in recent years because of the ability to access and look at what someone is into, or what they do in their own free time.

Believe it or not, these social networking sites have created a venue where company hiring specialists can look at possible hires to see if there attitude and etiquette outside of the office is the same as inside. Now obviously it would be hard to fire someone for a picture or comment made on their personal social networking page, however, if that person is a candidate for a job opportunity, they may be bypassed for a more appropriate candidate. Here are just a few way a social networking site can lose you a job.

1. Comments- Making derogatory comments or comments lude comments can make a prospective hire look undesirable so make sure to check the page daily and never reply with lude comment when looking for a job.

2. Posted Material- Make sure that pages are not filled with any pictures from friends or pictures taken at parties they may paint the prospective hire as looking unprofessional.

3. No site- Even though poor social networking pages can make an employee look, bad, not having can be a negative to. Some employers, depending on the job, may want an employee who networks and can show good personal skills.

Remember that social networking sites are a great way to meet friends and find opportunities, but they can also be a great way to lose opportunities.
