The Battle Over Internet Pornography

It’s possible that what you get to see on the internet won’t always be there for your viewing. These days there are a number of special interest groups who are working tirelessly to remove the Internet of some of it’s “questionable material.” The material at the epicenter of the battle: pornography.

There is no question today that pornography is a gigantic money maker but the question is one of censorship and First Amendment rights as opposed to the financial gain. There are those who are interested in the idea of free speech and freedom of expression. They say that the men and women who are portrayed in these videos are doing it of their free will and that they are in many cases practicing safe and responsible sex.

This argument doesn’t fly with parents of children who are mostly concerned with this kind of material being exposed to their children who are well underage to view such adult content. The pornography companies as well as those who believe it is a free speech issue will say that the companies take many precautions on their websites to ensure that minors are not permitted onto the site. They have age verification technology and they require a credit card in order to view all content.

Supporters of the pornography industry and their right to freedom of expression will tell you that it is the responsibility of the parents to make sure their children aren’t watching explicit material. Parents are given parental controls and password protection on the computer to make sure that there is no chance the child will watch such material.

The fact is that there is little those against pornography are going to be able to do to censor it. There might be people who do not think it is morally right but that isn’t enough to ever rule against the First Amendment.
